While there are many different types of teeth whitening available, if you are considering this procedure then it is important you are well informed.
Laser teeth whitening should now be a thing of the past as this system is typical for causing sharp zinging sensations and prolonged sensitivity in many patients due to the strength of the peroxides used. It is also considered to be an old fashioned system, with better, pain-free, ultra-modern teeth whitening lamps on the market. Some gum related issues could also arise due to these laser treatments.
Another option is a take home kit from a local pharmacy (easily available in the US) that consists of 2 trays and a whitening gel. However, results are often not good because the trays fit very poorly and simply aren’t made for everyone.
There are also cheap Chinese products available at many dentists, which we suggest you avoid like the plague…!
Thankfully, there is an alternative which has a fair price and gives an excellent result.
What Works Best?
If you have been investigating getting your teeth whitened, then you have probably come across Zoom Teeth Whitening. This is a system developed in the US which has been around for more than ten years and although the earlier versions did cause some patients to have sensitivity, the newer models have been tweaked and improved to offer zero sensitivity, decrease time in the chair and still offer great results.
How Does it Work?
The Zoom process uses a special gel which is combined with a blend of de-sensitizers to allow a totally comfortable experience. This gel is placed on to the front side of the teeth and the gums are protected with what is called a gingival barrier. This is a smooth substance, normally blue in color and acts to keep the whitening gel separated from the gums.
The next step is to have the specialized Zoom teeth whitening lamp moved in to position. With the teeth prepared and the lamp turned on, the special light activates the gel on the teeth and starts to break down stains and decolorisation. The lamp beeps after each 15 minute period to indicate the session has finished, at which time your dentist will check you are OK and how the teeth whitening session is going. A typical treatment consists of either three of four sessions of fifteen minutes, all done during one short appointment of about an hour.
What Results Should I Expect?
Teeth whitening is not designed to whiten teeth to an unnatural color. What it does do, however, is remove stains and yellowness from the teeth which has built up over the years.
Needless to say, those of us who drink a lot of red wine, smoke regularly and enjoy eating dark food substances like Chinese food will probably have good results from a teeth whitening session.
How do I Maintain my New, Whiter Teeth?
It’s important to be conscious of what you consume in the days and weeks that follow as the color stabilizes over the next 28 – 72 hours. You’ll be expected to follow through with regular professional cleanings and hygiene treatments at your dentist and if you are someone that enjoys red wine and other foods and drinks that stain, you may need a top-up session from time to time.
