HOW IS A CHIN REDUCTION SURGERY PERFORMED?

First of all, it is important to attend the consultation and evaluation with our specialist, Dr. Alfredo Zuiko. Here, 3D x-rays will be taken to obtain a correct diagnosis and explain the treatment in detail.

Once this is finished, the patient will be shown how his new chin would look after surgery. If the patient likes it, the appointment for chin reduction surgery is scheduled.

On the day of surgery, a small intraoral incision is made under the mouth. If the prominence of the chin is not considered severe, then the bone is ‘scraped’ to reduce it until it reaches the ideal size and shape.

However, if the prominence is large, then incisions are made and a portion of the bone is removed. Small titanium plates and screws are used to stabilize the new position of the chin.

AFTER CARE

After the operation, the treated area will be swollen and may have slight bleeding. To control these discomforts and prevent infection, you will be prescribed antibiotics and pain relievers.

It is important to rest and not do physical activities that could jeopardize recovery. This period should be at least two weeks, or as indicated by Dr Zuiko.

For the first few days you will need to follow a soft diet and use an antiseptic mouthwash.
