Mandibular implants, or mandibular augmentation, is a surgical procedure performed to improve the size, shape, or contour of the lower jaw. Mandibular implants are designed to provide a more balanced facial appearance.

The purpose of jaw implants is primarily cosmetic. The treatment is carried out with our specialized maxillofacial surgeon, Dr Alfredo Zuiko.

MANDIBULAR IMPLANTS: KEY ASPECTS

  1. Indications: Jaw implants are generally recommended for people who have a weak or underdeveloped lower jaw. For example, they are ideal for people with a lack of facial symmetry or an unbalanced profile.
  2. Types of Implants: These specialist implants are available in different shapes, sizes, and materials. Therefore, they can be adapted to the various needs of patients. Common materials used for mandibular implants include silicone, porous polyethylene, and titanium.
  3. Surgical Procedure: Mandibular implant surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. Dr Zuiko makes an incision inside the mouth (intraoral approach) or externally under the chin (submental approach) to access the mandible. The selected implant is then carefully placed and fixed to the bone. Screws or other fixation techniques are used, as necessary. Finally, the incision is closed with sutures, and dressings or bandages may be applied.

RECOVERY AND RESULTS OF MANDIBULAR IMPLANTS

Following the procedure, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescription pain relievers and cold compresses. A soft or liquid diet is recommended for a few days. They should follow oral hygiene instructions to prevent infection. Full recovery may take several weeks, during which normal activities and strenuous exercise should be avoided.

WHAT OTHER OPTIONS DO I HAVE?

Alternative Procedures: In some cases, mandibular implants can be combined with other procedures to achieve optimal results. Orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery), genioplasty (chin surgery) or facial fat grafting may be used. They can be performed simultaneously to address additional cosmetic concerns or to correct underlying skeletal issues.
