Cataract Eye Surgery in Lima, Peru | Surgery in Peru

Cataract removal is often needed when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy and vision is blurred.

Before Cataract Surgery

Some tests will be done before cataract surgery including assessing suitability, measuring the length of your eye and the curve of your cornea. These measurements help our eye specialist select the proper lens implant for your eye and discuss all of your options with you.

If you have previously had LASIK or other vision correction surgery, you can still have cataract surgery. We will need to know the details of your prescription before surgery, if possible.

How Does the Cataract Procedure Work?

A small incision is made in the side of the cornea where a tiny instrument is delicately inserted that uses a high frequency ultrasound to break up the centre of the cloudy lens and remove it with a gentle suction device.

After the cloudy lens is removed, it is replaced with an intraocular lens of plastic, silicone or acrylic. The new lens allows the light to pass through it to focus correctly on the retina. In most cases, the IOL is placed behind the iris which the colored part of the eye. Once in place, the doctor closes the incision and may or may not use stitches.

On completion of the cataract procedure, a protective shield is normally placed over the eye.

Cataract surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight hospital stay.

After Cataract Surgery

You’ll rest for a short while after the surgery is complete so that the doctor can monitor you. You won’t be able to drive so we will arrange transport for you. You’ll be prescribed eye drops and given post-care instructions which must be followed exactly as prescribed. Some patients experience blurred vision for a few days following surgery but this soon clears to leave clear vision again.

We recommend to stay in Lima for 10 – 14 days to allow time to complete follow-ups.
