Victoza, a New Drug against Obesity
Victoza, a pharmaceutical used for weight loss on those who suffer from obesity, is showing very good results on patients who are using it. Liraglutide is the name of the generic drug, and it has been proven to help people lose over 6 kg in 20 weeks.
The drug, which has been administered to patients via injection, has been proven to be more effective than other pharmacological therapies. For obese individuals, weight loss is vital, since they must take precautions against adversities that are consequences of this illness, as are diabetes type 2, hypertension, among others.
The study had 564 participants from all over Europe, whose body mass index was between 30 and 40 (which qualifies them as “obese”). One third of the patients included in the study had “pre-diabetes”, having elevated sugar levels in the blood, but not enough to qualify as “diabetes”.
The results concluded by the study are very satisfactory. With a dosage of 3 mg of Victoza (liraglutide), an adequate dietary regime and an exercise plan, the average weight lost was 7.2 kg (15.9 lb); and in lower doses of 1.2 mg, 1.8 mg and 2.4 mg there was a loss of 4.8 kg (10.5lb), 5.5kg (12.1lb) and 6.3kg (13.9lb)respectively. Those who were given placebos only managed to lose 2.8 kg (6.2lb).
Since Victoza (liraglutide) is a new drug, it is recommended that studies are held for longer than 5 months to determine the risks/benefits of the use of liraglutide.
