Saint Cristobal Hill, located in the district of Rimac, reaches 400 meters above sea level. From its summit, you can enjoy fantastic views of the whole of the city of Lima.
To reach Saint Cristobal, you can take a bus called an ‘urbanito’, which makes its way through the main streets of the historic city center before getting to the top of the hill. The bus stop is very near Government Palace and there are usually plenty of tour agents on hand in both the Main Square and Saint Martin Square.
The price of the tour is very reasonable, between 5 and 8 soles, depending on the competition. Each tour lasts approximately one hour and most include a running commentary of the attractions that can be seen along the way. Once at the top of the hill, visitors are given 20 minutes to look around and then the bus starts its journey back to the bus stop.
Descending from the bus, you will see an impressive 20 meter-high concrete cross. It used to be made of iron, and was placed here at the command of Francisco Pizarro in the 16th Century, at the time of the social upheaval caused by the Spanish invasion of the Inca lands. In ancient times it was thought that hills were gods or guardian spirits and also punishers of humankind. But when the Spanish Conquistadors took control they tried to wipe out these ancient beliefs by renaming the hills and by placing crosses on their summits.
As well as enjoying the view from Saint Cristobal, you can visit the site’s museum to find out more about the history of the hill and to see the vast photographic exhibition of Lima’s past.
