Perú cuenta con un reactor nuclear para elaborar medicamentos
El Centro Nuclear Óscar Miró Quesada de la Guerra, Racso, ubicado en Huarangal, en Comas, Lima, contiene en su interior un reactor el cual cumple con diversas funciones a favor de la salud y el desarrollo.
Este reactor que existe en el Perú desde hace 21 años, realiza gammagrafías, parecidos a los rayos X mediante el trabajo con radioisótopos o átomos inestables y que facilitan hacer los diagnósticos médicos como la precisión en el estudio de los tejidos del cuerpo humano.
El Instituto Peruano de Energía Nuclear (IPEN) también, a través del reactor, ha creado los radiofármacos programados para eliminar tumores de cáncer localizados en órganos y glándulas. Los paliativos para enfermedades de la tiroides o el cáncer de huesos provienen de material radiactivo generado por un reactor nuclear. Es sabido que en nuestro país, al año se atienden aproximadamente 60 mil pacientes gracias a la medicina nuclear.
Y finalmente, esta energía nuclear es utilizada en la agricultura, ya que la radiación ionizante se usa en semillas para obtener variaciones mejoradas de alimentos más resistentes al clima y a las plagas, y un período más largo de conservación.
