Latin America’s first molecular biology laboratory is established at Cayetano Heredia University in Peru
Thanks to the University of California, Peru’s Cayetano Heredia University has been equipped with Latin America’s first molecular biology laboratory.
The lab includes high-tech optical tweezers which use light to manipulate microscopic objects as small as a single atom. The radiation pressure from a focused laser beam is able to trap small particles. This will enable doctors to find treatments for complex health problems such as multi-drug-resistant TB.
Tuberculosis is a curable disease that continues to kill millions of people in the third world, offering a clear example of global inequalities in access to health care. Drugs to combat the disease have existed for fifty years, and deaths from TB are uncommon in first world countries. Yet reports from Partners in Health (PIH) state that TB kills 5000 people each day, and nearly 2,000,000 every year.
During the last fifteen years, incomplete treatments due to lack of medical staff, medicine shortages and socioeconomic barriers have led to a proliferation of multiple-drug-resistant strains of TB. These strains, known as MDR-TB, are now present in many third world countries, such as Peru.
The country’s new molecular biology laboratory will be able to carry out first rate research into the disease, and hopefully save the lives of many Peruvians.
