American Society of Hematology and Health Volunteers Overseas begin hematology program in Peru

hematologyThe American Society of Hematology (ASH) and Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) recently joined to launch a new hematology program in Peru, with a special focus on Lima, Arequipa and Cusco areas.

Enrico M. Novelli, MD, who is managing the initiative, stated: “We are enthusiastic to launch this ASH/HVO program in Peru.”

The principal aim of the program is to provide specialist hematology training to doctors from hospitals in the previously mentioned regions. Volunteers will provide informative and practical training in both clinical and laboratory issues concerning hematology. They will cover a wide range of blood disorders, such as anemia, abnormal bleeding, clotting, leukemia and lymphoma. Methods designed to enhance the purity of the blood supply will also be taught.

A range of medical professionals and students will attend the training sessions, including undergraduate medical and laboratory students, postgraduates, fellows, and staff. Volunteers will also help out with the assessment of postgraduate fellow investigations and try to improve the dialogue between laboratory staff and clinicians.

Both pediatric and adult hematology/oncology clinicians and lab scientists are welcome to attend assignments of 1 – 4 weeks. A working knowledge of Spanish would be useful, but not necessary.
